Mustang is named after Virginia “Mustang” au Augustus – The Lionheart of the Rebellion

Mustang is a Gold of rare integrity and intellect—brilliant, strategic, and fiercely independent. Born into power as the daughter of Nero au Augustus, she defies her society’s obsession with dominance and cruelty, seeking instead to rebuild it with justice and empathy.

Her sharp mind and political acumen make her as formidable as any warrior. She balances Darrow’s passion with reason, often challenging him to see the broader picture beyond vengeance or victory. Beneath her composure lies deep compassion and a belief that humanity—not hierarchy—should guide leadership.

Throughout the Red Rising saga, Mustang evolves from an idealistic student to a visionary leader. Her courage to stand against her own kind and reimagine a broken system cements her as both the brain and the heart of the revolution—and a symbol of the world that might rise from its ashes.

In her pack, Mustang has grown into the role of Matriarch after Maci’s passing.

Using her incredible nose and instinctual drive for prey, she seeks out all the opportunities to hunt the mice and tree rats on our property. In the sport of scent work, she has developed into an incredible teammate. She also enjoys time with Meghan in the Rally and Agility ring. A great performance dog, she is always keen to enjoy structured “play” and has plenty of titles to prove it.
